Business Letters Written - Responses Received

A few weeks ago fourth graders wrote business letters to companies complimenting them on their products and requesting samples. We have received some responses. Some companies just sent letters, but a few sent samples. We have enjoyed macaroni and cheese from Our Specialty Foods, free pencils and recipes from Ocean Spray, pencils from Pepsico, coupons for free flavored water from Kwik Trip, beef jerky from Jack Link's, recipe books and raisins from Sun-Maid and other delightful things. Not all students get to enjoy the items. That depends on which language arts class the student receiving the response is in. Still companies, for the most part, have been generous and many students were given enough to share. Any student that receives something free then responds with a thank you letter. It has been great fun and learning all around.

Punchcard Prizes Given Out Today!

If your child comes home with an object or edible treat that you don't recognize it could be because they had few or no punches in their December/January punchcard and were rewarded for it. Students usually don't have to use punches as long as they remember to bring in all of their supplies, use schedule bathroom/drink breaks and sharpen their pencils during non-teaching times. The kids really enjoy the prizes and I don't my spending my own money on them to add a little fun to the classroom situation.

Famous American Book Report Due Thursday!

Parents, be sure to ask your child about the Famous American book report. Remember that form you signed? Your child should have done the reading and research and rought draft by now. Please read through it before he/she writes or types the final draft. This is an important grade for both social studies and writing. Students are being graded on ideas and content, organization and both visual and verbal presentation. Students will orally present their book reports starting February 7th, 2012.

Food Pantry

Necedah Schools are collecting non-perishable items for the food pantry. Fourth graders are competing against other grades to collect the most items. Mrs. Ledvina's class is working hard at bringing in lots of items, so come on 4 SUPER H! Let's bring in enough items to match them. So far we have 40 items thanks mainly to Izzi, Ms Gross, Kyra and a huge box from MacKenzie B. Parents, how about raiding the cupboard and sending some items in with your child? It is a great way to help out the community!

It is trimester 2 now parents! That means that your child starts anew with Accelerated Reader points. They will need six points to meet their goal by March 9th. As an extra incentive, any child who achieves 50 points for Acclerated Reader will receive a free lunch provided by Ms Gross.

Punch Card Prizes

Students who had value left on their privilege card -- called a punch card -- were able to "buy" a prize today. Prizes included bottles of 7up, pencil sharpeners, shirts, bags, notepads, a cookie cutter, rubber and cloth jewelry and other miscellaneous items. Over half the class received a prize courtesy of Ms. Gross and the P.A.T.T. team. Punch card prizes are given out every two months through out the year.

There may be two times on the form due to the fact that your child has different math and language arts teachers. Since these are core subjects (meaning that they are the most important), your conferences are with the teacher or teachers who teach these subjects. That may mean that you are not conferencing with your child's homeroom teacher. If you feel that it is important to speak with your child's homeroom teacher, take a look at the teacher's conference schedule to find a time when she might be free. That would be the time to poke your head in to her classroom to ask for a quick conference. The teachers will do their best to accommodate you.

First Late Start Held Today

The first late start was held at Necedah Schools today. Teachers arrived at the regular time and collaborated on ways to improve student learning. Students were involved in a variety of other activities (if they arrived at the regular time.) The rest of the day was run on an abbreviated schedule. A good time was had by all. :-) Our next late state will run on September 28th.

Parents, I would like to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to teach your child. A classroom of students becomes much like a family. There are the happy moments -- the laughter, the proud moments - the misty eyes, the frustrated/frustrating moments - some teeth gritting, the parting - more tears. Just like a family, a classroom of students and a teacher, isn't always perfect, but it is certainly filled with love.
