The latest theme in reading is called Problem Solvers. So far we read the story My Name is Maria Isabel, The Best Fish Ever and Marven of the Great North Woods. Teacher read alouds have included Adrianna's Chickens and The Stone in the Road. We have worked on learning proper use of irregular be verbs and irregular verbs such as grow, grew and have grown. We have discussed writing an opinion, using commas in introductory phrases, and word families. We continue to read from our read aloud book The Sea of Monsters.
For quarter #4 students are required to read and take Accelerated Reader tests on at least six books. For every ten books a child reads and tests on they will receive a McDonald's certificate that can be used for a free happy meal. The last of the Pizza Hut Book-It rewards were given out earlier in the week. They must be redeemed by May 1st.
In math we completed our unit on long division this week. We quizzed twice and tested once. Results were rather disappointing in the score department. Many students are not remembering to follow the steps in problem solving.
We have been preparing for our Madison trip by learning all about the state capital. Students should be busy coloring their Madison Activity Packets. Nine pages must be colored/completed by April 23rd. The final page/back cover of the booklet must be completed after our trip to Madison on April 23rd. All booklets are due on Friday, April 24th.
In science students are doing the mysterious powders unit. We are also looking forward to Earth Day and Arbor Day next week. Students will plant trees at Buckhorn Park the morning of Tuesday, April 21st as long as the weather cooperates. We still need chaperones for that morning.
Writing/spelling class has involved working on a research report. We look forward to reading these interesting reports.
Students are up to page 66 in their handwriting books and just learned the letters p and x in keyboarding.
We still have much to accomplish before the end of the year. Parents please continue to sign your child's agenda book and be sure that he/she is reading 20 minutes nightly and recording the book titles in the agenda book.
