Academics in 4 SUPER H 9/29-10/3/2008

By the Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder was our story this week. We worked on noting details while reading the story. We tested on text organization, noting details and information and study skills. (The scores were disappointing. We will have to practice those skills some more.) We investigated the word roots tele meaning over a distance, and rupt meaning to break. We worked on identifying common nouns.

We started our descriptive writing unit in writing class and had a spelling test on the first 20 words on Friday.

In science we are finishing up Chapter2-Observing Weather. We have been going outside and using our homemade wind vanes to find wind direction and our homemade anemometers to find wind speed. We will start taking a precipitation measurement using our rain gauge that is placed outside on Friday, October 3rd. Our Chapter 2 test will be sometime next week after we have a class review day. Be sure to study on your own at home!!

In social studies this week we began studied the American Revolution and Settlement. We will have our first Great Lakes and surrounding states quiz next week. The Meliken Puppet Show about famous Americans was a nice tie-in.

Math this week involved solving word problems, tables of combinations, and comparison problems. We also spent considerable time on multiplication and division fluency.
